Event Description

We are trying to get an open call to the public at Mesa Public Schools Board meetings and have gotten the Board to agree to put in on the agenda for their June 9th meeting. Currently citizens can speak at meetings but are limited to items that are already on the agenda. To get an item on the agenda a citizen has to make a request in writing to the district a week before the meeting and it’s up to the district’s discretion whether it will be included.

An open call to the public would allow the public to bring up items not on the agenda. This is what neighboring school districts and the City of Mesa currently allow so this change in policy would simply bring openness in Mesa Public Schools in line with what those entities now enjoy.

The June 9th meeting will be either at 5:00 pm or 7:00Pm at district offices at 549 N. Stapley in Mesa. The meeting notice must be posted at least 24 hours ahead of time and can be confirmed by going to this link:

Come to speak on this issue or simply to listen. It is likely the issue will also come up at the June 23rd meeting at the same location. These are not opportunities to discuss Common Core since it’s not known or expected that it will be on the agenda for these two meetings. However, if we can get a change in district policy it should make addressing those issues, as well as other issues the district isn’t focusing on, in the future.
