PHOENIX -- Investigators are trying to determine who is behind some serious vandalism at a Valley charter school.

It happened over the weekend at Academy of Arizona at 21st Avenue and Indian School Road. Early estimates put the damage at about $100,000.

Window and glass doors were shattered and computers were smashed. In addition, there was some graffiti that appeared to be gang related. Some items, including laptops, projectors and even some money, were also stolen.

"It makes me very sad because we're a small charter school and we don't have a lot of material and supplies and those kinds of things, and what we do have has been vandalized," said Eddie Hoedebeck, the school's principal. "We're going to have to regroup and figure out how we're going to continue the rest of this week. And we will do it."

Academy of Arizona, a K-through-eighth-grade charter school had some exciting things planned for the last week of school. School is canceled for today, but the principal said the cleanup is already under way and the plan is to have students back in class tomorrow.

"We're going to get busy as soon as we have the go-ahead from the police," Hoedebeck said.

The principal said she doesn't know who is behind the vandalism, but she doesn't believe it was students.

"We're going to rise above it," she said. "We're a great school and we have a great community. We'll move forward ....

"There has been no indication of who did this and we don't want to speculate. We just want to focus on recovery,"

Police are investigating.
