White House phasing out abstinence ed?

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced new funding for teen pregnancy prevention grants, but a large part of the funding will
be used to promote the use of contraceptives.

Of the $155 million, $100 million comes from the teen pregnancy prevention program, which replaces an abstinence-centered course that recently
expired. Valarie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA),
thinks the Obama administration wants the public to believe they are
open to abstinence education -- but she argues their actions tell a
different story.

"It's very obvious where the priorities of the administration are, and we
don't really have to read...the tea leaves here," she contends.

About $33 million has been issued for abstinence programs, but Huber reports there is a movement to wipe out that amount.

"A group of anti-abstinence ideologues in the Senate introduced a bill
before the Senate departed for their recess that would zero out even
that little bit of funding for abstinence education," she laments. "So
make no mistake about it -- there is an agenda here, and the agenda is
to censor any abstinence-centered education from American's youth."

The NAEA spokeswoman is concerned that most of the taxpayers' dollars
are going to programs that will bring explicit sex education to schools
across the country.
